about burying grounds – how originally these had been churchyards, and later, as towns and cities grew, private companies had been formed to develop cemeteries. Almost all cemeteries are now in the care of local authorities – Bereavement Services departments. The Interment registers for cemeteries are also in the care of Councils, and most authorities will search these for a fee. The amount of the fee will depend on how much searching is required. Unusually, the Interment Registers for the Southern Necropolis are held in the Mitchell Library.
As well as these registers, there are printed “Monumental Inscriptions” - that is transcriptions of headstones for many Scottish cemeteries. Unfortunately, these do not exist for the biggest cemeteries, which include many of the Glasgow burying grounds. There is a list of these held in the Mitchell on the Glasgow city Council web site.
